Mention Farrow and Ball and instantly you are transported into a world of beautiful interior finishes. Famous the world over for their wondrous colours. Endlessly copied and coveted but never matched. The very epitome of English style. Their advice service is brilliant, I rang once with a query and was put through to a really friendly and helpful chap from the paint workshop, he answered all my questions and was really encouraging of my latest DIY venture. Even the paint charts are lovely!! I have one in my handbag all the time!

All things British.

This week I want to wave the flag for all things British, it is a big year for us here in blighty. Today marks the start of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee and of course in the Summer we host the olympics. I also want to feature my favourite British based bloggers, and will be doing that over the next few weeks along with celebrating wonderful, quintessentially English talent.

I am off to a friends birthday party tomorrow evening, the theme is super heroes. I am not a great fan of fancy dress parties, I always feel rather robbed of the chance to put on something lovely and new. Paid a visit to a wonderful vintage shop in nearby Totnes called Revival, it is an absolute treasure trove of wonderful, old, retro and unusual clothes. I have decided to go as James Bond! Bought a gorgeous old dinner jacket and soft white shirt. Will steal a bow tie off my other half and hey presto. It is surprisingly rather a good look and I think I will re use the dinner jacket with it's lovely silk lining with jeans.

Odd sort of week, no major disruptions or complications, just one of those weeks where it doesn't quite flow, things just seem slightly ill fitting. Calm Wednesday.

I woke feeling rather "grumpy" and out of sorts this morning. The cat was yowling outside my bedroom window in the early hours, obviously flexing his muscles against any trespassing cat! This in turn set the dogs barking, so I am feeling rather frayed around the edges. Hope my general mood will improve as the day goes along. New Week, New Start, New Thinking.

For me, this year is about taking control of my life. Concentrating on changing the things that I can, and not worrying about the things that I can't. taking little steps, getting pleasure from the small things along the way and being more at peace with myself. I have been struggling of late with my identity, a sense of who I am, I feel that I have lost my way and I need to regain some purpose and self belief. So, hopefully for me 2012 will be an uplifting year with a sense of achievement.

Fabrics, Flowers and Spring Colours.

I have always been impatient for a fresh, new start once the Christmas celebrations are over. I never leave my decorations up until 12th night ( my Mother is always horrified that I don't ) but I long for the newness of the year ahead, willing Spring to come along, So out with the old, tired tree, and in with wonderful pots of hyacinths, jugs of tulips and pretty colours, wonderful fabrics with just a hint of a nostalgic whisper and vintage charm.

Is there anything more pleasing than an English garden? I have always believed that if colours work together in nature they will work well with interior decoration in a natural and unpretentious way.

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, a combination of feeling unwell and a few technical difficulties with my apple mac, which hopefully are now sorted, kept me away.

I wish I could feel Christmasy, but I just can't seem to get into it yet. I usually love this time of year and so hope the yuletide fever will soon take hold.

I bought the new Christmas CD from Michael Buble today which is wonderful and I did sing along in the car on my way home, so........ here's hoping it inspires me. I think somehow as my daughter has now left school I don't have the usual routine and rhythm of term times which makes it rather strange this year.

One Of Those Days!

This is how I am feeling today!!! Ha Ha, very scatterbrained. One of those days when everything has gone wrong. Slept in late so my daughter was too late to catch the bus into work so Mum here had to rush out of the house without a coffee to get here there on time!!!! I ask you. Raced back home to blitz the house for a viewing at 10 am, only just done in time before the people arrived and I escaped with the dogs. Phew, feel quite exhausted.

SO.... big apologies, but my guest post will now have to wait until next week, I hope you will enjoy it. Off out to lunch now, and a large glass of wine.... well it is Friday.

Gosh it seems like a very long week.

Trying very hard to IGNORE my whitecompany catalogue which is full of absolutely gorgeous things for Christmas. I have a real weakness for their scented candles, particularly Winter and Peony. For me, they add a wonderful touch of luxury to the home. Each year I go to one of their stores, usually Cheltenham, and buy some Christmas decorations. PLEASE open a store in Exeter!!! I promise I will be a regular customer!

I am such a fan of Emma Bridgewater, and have been for many years. I have a lot of her mugs, they always feature on my birthday and Christmas lists, and my daughter very sweetly buys me a mug each Mother's day. Ever since my daughter was little we purchase one of Matthew Rice's beautiful advent calendars.

I am thrilled that Emma has now introduced some gorgeous bedding to her range and I am already dropping hints for Christmas.

My next venture in the New Year is another move!! We just feel that this place doesn't suit us. We are planning to be more rural, to have hens and ducks again. Our new home will have a seperate cottage or barn conversion so that I can do top end holiday lets. I have a feeling that the gorgeous birds and polka dot bedlinen will feature heavily in the children's room!!

Me Time.

Today is my birthday, I have been feeling less than positive recently, rather a downer on myself in all areas of my life. However today I am going to be kind to myself, generous in my thoughts and take a softer line.

Last night some friends came over for supper, it was a lovely evening, enjoyed by all. This morning I opened lovely cards with sweet messages, so I must be ok!

One of my friends gave me a wonderful package full of Jo Malone goodies. I have lit one of the candles and will later raise a glass to myself and remember that we can't expect to always get things right, to always know the answers and to please everyone. BUT, I am me and it is ok to be less than perfect!

Hi, I hope you all had a good weekend. My other half went off to the Goodwood Revival on Sunday, I confess that I had one of those wonderful, lazy days when you wake and know that you can snuggle back under the covers as there are no time pressures for you to get up. I padded around in my jim jams, read for a while and in between the rain showers, weeded in my veg garden. I lit the fire in the afternoon and watched a re-run of Midsomer Murders!!!

My daughter and I had an Indian takeaway in our pyjamas in front of the fire and telly and generally chilled......BLISS!

Country Love and Autumn Days.

Berries, roaring fires, brisk county walks, wet dogs, warm socks in wellies, steaming mugs of hot chocolate, barbours, early nights, damson jam, soft throws, scented candles and hip flasks.

Bracken, crunchy leaves, rivers, heather and gorse, lazy cattle, jewel like colours, frosty mornings, bonfires, horses hooves, game pies, a good book, tweeds and checks, tartans and conkers.

Orchards, crumbles, snuggly jumpers, wooly hats, cosy pyjamas, BBC drama, jacket potaotes, sloe gin, pub lunches, buckets full of apples, baskets filled with cones, pheasants and pumpkins, ribbed tights and cashmere cardis.

I am SUCH a country girl it is in my blood, I cannot imagine living in a town again (although I loved my time living and working in London when I was younger) For me the countryside is part of my personality and essential to my wellbeing. Autumn has to be my favourite time of year, the surrounding country looks at it's very best. I am never happier than when walking with my dogs on the moor, it is food for the soul.

This is not the post I had intended for you all today. However today has conspired against me, I am feeling fraught and not a little cross. Some of you will recall that my daughter was involved in a car accident just over a year ago, I have been trying, unsuccessfully to resolve the claim with little or no satisfaction, a general lack of care and communication seems to prevail with my insurance company and a greed and determination from the other driver that does nothing to restore my belief in other peoples honesty or good nature.
So today I have decided to put it all in the hands of my solicitor. Phew, these things upset me, unsettle me and make me concerned, maybe I should be stronger.

SO....... my post today is different to the one planned, I hope you will like the images and, when a sense of calmness has been restored I will blog the post I had intended.

Goodbye My Friends.

After much thought, I have decided to say goodbye to my blog for a while, I really hope that I will come back again. It has been such a pleasure, surprisingly actually as I am not really sure what prompted me to begin, and I have been amazed at just how important it has been, not only to post but to read your lovely blogs.

I have found such inspiration in your posts and I feel that some of you have become "friends".

Friday Thank Yous.

Sorry for the lack of posts this week but it has, as you can imagine, been a very difficult one. One thing I can say during this awful time is that I have seen the absolute best of my daughter and her friends. So often young people get criticised and judged, however I have only seen their wonderful compassion, support, understanding, intelligence and a commitment to each other that would shame many "adults" I know.

I will not be posting until after the funeral, then I hope for all concerned things will move forward, gently.

Why?

We received terrible news on Sunday morning, a very close friend of my daughters from a family very dear to us died unexpectedly. We are stunned and struggling to take it all in. There is nothing we can do or say to his parents that can ease their pain, except to let them know that we are here for them.

A young, vibrant life gone in a moment with so many questions unanswered.

It has left us feeling shocked and at loss as to why. All we know is that we will miss him so very very much. I can still cuddle my daughter, I simply cannot comprehend that being snatched away.

Country Girl

I like nothing better than pottering in my garden in my wellies, the dogs with me and the radio on in the greenhouse.....Bliss. Don't get me wrong, I love to get into a pretty dress and heels, in fact I will be doing just that tomorrow evening when I attend a friend's book launch. I have lived and worked in London and had a ball, however now I am ready to settle in the country and enjoy all that it means to me.

Hey, what can I say?..... I am a country girl at heart.

Back In Blog Land.

I am feeling a little guilty, as I have crept away from hanging curtains and unpacking boxes to do this post. It has been lovely to finally catch up with my favourite blogs, you have all been very busy in the 10 days I was without broadband. The new house is lovely, we have been blessed with lovely weather for the move. The garden here is wonderful with lots to discover, Spring is a great time to move into a new place as you can see which plant comes up where, what needs moving, and , what needs planting. In this case lots of roses. I am glued to the Chelsea Flower Show each evening for ideas and inspiration.
